The Curragh Plain

The Curragh is a flat open plain of almost 5,000 acres (over 20 km² or almost 8 square miles) in County Kildare, between Newbridge and Kildare Town.

This area is well known for Irish horse breeding and training. The Irish National Stud is located on the edge of Kildare town

The Curragh Racecourse, usually abbreviated to The Curragh, is Ireland's most important Thoroughbred race track.

The first recorded race on the plain took place in 1727 and the first Derby was held in 1866.

All 5 Irish classics are run at The Curragh, The Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks, the Irish St. Leger, the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Irish 2,000 Guineas

*1 Furlong is 201.168 metres and there are 8 furlongs in a mile.

^Group 1 is the term used for the highest level of Thoroughbred races in many countries. In Europe weight-for-age conditions always apply and races may also be restricted to age groups or a stipulated sex.
