TRANSITION YEAR
Last September we started transition year. At first we weren’t
sure if we had made the right decision but a few weeks on we
were all really glad we decided to do it.
During the year we got to do so much it’s almost unbelievable.
We got to do self-defence, which was really enjoyable and very
practical. We also did First Aid for 6 weeks, which was very
useful. At the end of the course we got an exam and if we passed
we got a certificate saying we can perform First Aid. We also
did a law course where we learned about the legal system from
barristers. At the end of the course we did an exam and we got
to visit the Four Courts to see a real life court case. We also
got to do work experience every Friday. This was a really useful
part of Transition Year that gave us a taste of the world of
work and helped us with our career decisions.
On top of these activities we had classes where we did our usual
academic subjects and some new ones like Environmental Studies
and European Studies. We were also very free to do large projects
during the year like decorating 2 classrooms and designing a
memorial garden. We also got to do enterprise where we had to
set up and run our own business. Another very worthwhile part
of the year was the Gaisce Awards. These are given out by the
president’s office to people who complete the necessary tasks.
For our community involvement part we helped out with the publishing
of this newsletter.
Apart from our educational experiences this year we also got
to make new friends. It’s amazing how close we all were at the
end of the year. We really enjoyed transition year and if we
were given the choice again we would do it in a second.
YOUNG AT HEART GROUP

break in July. The exact date has yet to be confirmed. The group

ST. PETER’S WELL
The feast of St. Peter and St. Paul falls on June 29th. As a
result of last year’s beautiful gathering at St. Peter’s well,
many people present called for a similar event each year. This
year we will have a small ceremony at 8pm on Friday 29 of June
at St. Peter’s Well ,Greenhills, Donadea ,all are welcome to
attend. If you would like to help at cleaning up around the
well contact the Tir Na Mona office for details about the times
and dates we propose to tidy it up.
WEEKEND COMPANION
(required for special needs teenager)
Under the auspices of the E.H.B., we wish to employ a female
aged 18+ as a partner to a 16 yr. old girl for social activities
and involvement in the local community. The person undertaking
this assignment must be outgoing, have a caring nature and be
aware of the loneliness – both for parents and children – that
can exist in our society. The rewards of contact with such a
person can be unique. This post would be ideal for a 3rd Level
student wanting weekend work for 5 hours or more each week.
If interested, please contact Kevin or Mary Conliffe at 045
860525.
Get Well Soon Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Alan Byrne
from all his friends in the Tir na Mona area.
