FRIENDS
"Friends of Donadea Forest" Tir na Mona
held a public forum in St. Kevin's clubhouse, Staplestown
on Tuesday night the 26th of February. The aim of the facilitated
forum was to obtain ideas and suggestions for the proposed
future development of the Castle yard, Farm buildings and
the walled Garden. The Event was well publicised through
the local media and local radio. Councillor Michael Fitzpatrick,
a member of Friends of the Forest, chaired the meeting.
Included in the attendance of over 80 was local Councillors
P. J. Sheridan and Tony McEvoy, Mr. Willie Carroll, Director
Community and Enterprise with Kildare County Council, Mr.
John O'Sullivan, Coillte, Mr Brian Kelly, Kelt, Mr. Gerry
McCarthy, Fas, Mr. Grattan DeCourcy Wheeler, Grange Castle
(Near Edenderry), Mr. Seamus Cullen, local Historian, Ms.
Bernie Hurst, North West Kildare Development Company and
many representatives from the various Organisations throughout
North Kildare and further a field as well as many representatives
from the local community. Historian Seamus Cullen showed
several slides of the walled gardens in their heyday and
included in them was one of the magnificent conservatory.
It would be everyone's dream come true if the gardens, conservatory
and summerhouse could be restored to their original splendour.
From the suggestions put forward at the forum "Friends of
the Forest", with the help of facilitator, Mr. Len Cummins,
are preparing a report on the future uses of this most loved
facility and are hoping to present the report to the Minister
for Finance, Mr. Charlie McCreevy T.D. in the very near
future. The public, on the night, highlighted the fact that
"Donadea" must remain in public ownership for the future
generations to enjoy as we do now.
