St. Kevins
in Staplestown was turned into a "Wild West" setting on August Bank Holiday
Sunday night. Cowboys from Knockanally, Ovidstown, Hortland, Gilltown, Ballinafagh and
other remote outbacks of the Tir Na Mona area turned up.
One Indian from the Sioux Tribe made a
brave (excuse the puns) effort at drinking firewater and performing a war dance (or was it
a love dance?) that the "Saloon Gal" had taught.
Congratulations to Debbie Roberts and
Stephen Stanley who won the Best Cow Persons! Awards.
The Indian award was a one horse race,
with the Sioux Indian cantering home.
The "Saloon Gal" entertained
some lonely Cowboys from the Kilmurry Ranch, and sent them on the trail by dawn, before
the posse caught them.
Full marks to Alan Byrne for the interior
design of the hall, the tables and the signs. Thanks to Willie Kane, David Curtiss and
Liam 0Farrell, Fergal McKeon, Bernard Owens, Sean Flannery for the use of his
"Dance Floor", Edward Cummins for the straw bales, to Delores Kennedy, Morna
Hosey, Mary Holton Aileen Saunders and Bernadette Crean for food and ticket sales. Thanks
to St. Kevins for the use of the facility. Thanks to Alan Brerton and his band and
thanks to Andy Noone for his help, and congratulations to him on winning the raffle prize
which was donated by Coillte.
So long until next year!
