Team captain Dermot Earls and Niall O'Shea secured victories against opponents rated over 200 points higher and with Derek Meade putting in a solid performance on the bottom board, the team ensured their future for next year with a 3-3 draw. The team's best performers were Niall O'Shea (7/10) and Derek Meade (4/5). Other players captained by Dermot Earls were Maurice Canavan, Hugues Hammouma, Charlie Talbot, Leo Talbot, Michael Kennedy and Oskar Knapik.
The team was never without controversy and team captain Dermot had a baptism of fire having to survive two appeals to the league controller!

The Curragh were defeated 2.5-5.5 by a strong Elm Mount side in Round 7 of the League. After 7 rounds, the Curragh look strong enough to remain in Division 2 in our first season after promotion last year - a few tough battles ahead.
Bottom boards Derek Stacey and Franco Rivera have performed well against strong opposition to keep the team in the League. With games against Rathmines B and Lucan still to come, the Curragh's destiny is in their own hands.....
Other team members are Richard Arundell, Mark McLoughlin, Noel Lynch, Billy O'Connor, Peter Klompers and Brendan Duffy.

The Curragh's second team under the guidance of Dermot Earls are in a fight for survival in their first season in Division 4. A good 3.5-2.5 win against Drogheda last Saturday gives some hope that the team might be able to survive with only 4 rounds to go.
Newcomer Derek Meade got off to a winning start in the last round and Niall O'Shea prevailed in a tense time scramble to gain the points. This one will go down to the wire! Other team members are Mossy Canavan, Charlie Talbot and Leo Talbot.

Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday 19th May 2005. Chairman: Derek Stacey Secretary: Charlie Talbot Treasurer: Mark McLoughlin Team Captain 2005/06(Ennis Shield): Richard Arundell Team Captain 2005/06(Bodley Cup): Noel Kelly
Bothe Curragh teams were at home today:- Ennis Shield 2004/05 Round 9 - 9 April 2005 Curragh v Finglas Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 Mark McLoughlin (1549) 0-1 Noel Lynch (1392) 0-1 Peter Klompers (1322) 1-0 Niall O'Shea (1109) 1-0 Dermot Earls This was an important game between the Curragh and Finglas who were both on 31 points at the start of the day and the Curragh kept the initiative before next week's final games. Noel's unbeaten run came to an end when he fell into an opening trap which left his King on the run for much of the game. Peter and Niall both had good results against stronger opponents. Richard had a comfortable win while I lost a tight game when my opponents two bishops were too strong against my bishop and knight. Bodley Cup 2004/05 Round 6 - 9 April 2005 Curragh v Ballinasloe Brendan Duffy 1-0 Patrick Launders Derek Stacey 1-0 Eamonn Launders Noel Kelly 1-0 Kevin Kinsella Hugue Hammound 0.5-0.5 Sam Hobbs David Thorpe 0-1 Sophie Hobbs The second team also got a good result today with a 3.5-1.5 win against Ballinasloe. A first outing for new player Huge Hammound who managed a draw.
Curragh v Bray/Greystones Brendan Duffy 0-1 Derek Stacey 1-0 Noel Kelly 1-0 Charlie Talbot 1-0 Luke Heffernan 0-1 Curragh's best result so far in the Bodley Cup in this away game.
Curragh v Drogheda Noel Lynch Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 Mark McLoughlin (1549) 1-0 Noel Lynch (1396) 0.5-0.5 Peter Klompers (1322) 0-1 Dermot Earls (1200) 1-0 Niall O'Shea (1109) 1-0 Peter has a disastrous game losing within a couple of moves! Good results on the other boards against a full strength Drogheda side. Noel is still unbeaten.... Curragh are still in second place but with a game more than everyone else played. Niall O'Shea
Curragh v Phibsboro Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 Mark McLoughlin (1549 0-1 Noel Lynch (1396) 0.5-0.5 Peter Klompers (1322) 0-1 Dermot Earls (1200) 0.5-0.5 Niall O'Shea (1109) 0-1 A bad day's work for the Curragh managing only 2 points against Phibsboro. Mark and Niall had dreadful games barely surviving the opening while Peter blundered into an easy trap. At least there was the consolation of watching Ireland beat Scotland at Murrayfield.
Curragh v Naomh Barrog Brendan Duffy 0.5/0.5 A Blake Derek Stacey 1-0 K Behan Noel Kelly 0-1 A Walsh Charlie Talbot 1-0 N Behan Luke Heffernan 0-1 P Behan Total: 2.5/5 Curragh finally got a respectable result sharing the spoils againt the Kilbarrack side. Charlie Talbot and Derek Stacey's rust has come off and both are back to winning ways. A first outing for junior Luke Heffernan who will learn a lot from today's game. Luke Heffernan
Curragh v St. Benildus Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 Mark McLoughlin (1549) 0.5/0.5 Noel Lynch (1396) 1-0 Peter Klompers (1322) 0-1 Dermot Earls (1200) 0.5/0.5 Brendan Duffy (u/g) 0-1 Total Score: 24.5/36 A bit disappointing for the Curragh who have now lost some ground on the leaders. Richard had a solid win while Mark could only manage a draw despite a strong position throughout the game. Noel was under pressure during the game and did well to win in the end while Peter's position fell apart in the endgame. Substitute Brendan went a pawn down early on and never recovered. Black to move (Richard) missed a win in two moves early in his game. Would a two year old child miss it!!! Qxf2+
The Curragh have entered a team in the Bodley Cup for the first time in a number of years.
Unfortunately, the team have had a rusty start scoring just two points in their first two rounds against Naomh Barrog and Longford.
Team members are: Derek Stacey, Brendan Duffy, Charlie Talbot, Noel Kelly and David Thorpe.
Curragh v Faughs - Round 4 Curragh v Faughs Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 Patrick McGowan (1430) Mark McLoughlin (1549) 1-0 Sean Farrell (1391) Noel Lynch (1396) 1-0 Philip Clarke (1383) Peter Klompers (1322) 1-0 Peter Constantinescu (1293) Dermot Earls (1200) 0.5 Dominic Reilly (u/r) Niall O'Shea (1109) 1-0 Daniel O'Sullivan (850) Total: 2.5/3
Curragh v Malahide - Round 5 Curragh v Malahide Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 Tom O'Sullivan (1571) Mark McLoughlin (1549) 0-1 Justin Daly (1544) Noel Lynch (1396) 0.5 Anthony Whalley (1447) Peter Klompers (1322) 0.5 Cormac Roche (1373) Dermot Earls (1200) 0-1 John Shearan (1265) Niall O'Shea (1109) 0-1 Seamus Martin (1266) Total: 2.5/6
Curragh v Gonzaga - Round 3 - 13th November 2004 Curragh v Gonzaga Richard Arundell (1749) 0-1 G. Nerney Mark McLoughlin (1549) 1-0 R. Collins Noel Lynch (1396) 0.5-0.5 R. Crowley Peter Klompers (1322) 0.5-0.5 E. Hadfield Dermot Earls (1200) 1-0 P. Aronna Niall O'Shea (1109) 1-0 Default The Curragh were pleased to come out of this one with a win with some very hard fought games against the Dublin college side. Richard succumbed to a complicated kingside attack and sacrifice while Noel was unable to take advantage of a pawn advantage, the game ending in a draw in the middle game. Peter and his opponent agreed a draw in a tricky game. There were good wins for Mark and Dermot with Niall picked up his easiest points of the season with a default.
Meanwhile Ireland were beating South Africa in Lansdowne Road - Good day all round. Total Score: 14/18 (After 3 rounds) A full league schedule is available at: www.leinsterchess.com Results are posted at: www.geocities.com/chess_ie
Naomh Barrog v Curragh - Round 2 - 29th October 2004 Naomh Barrog v Curragh David Eccles (1357) 0-1 Richard Arundell (1749) PC Quinn (1345) 0-1 Mark McLoughlin (1549) M O'Dwyer (1226) 0-1 Noel Lynch (1396) J Rafferty (1163) 0-1 Peter Klompers (1322) P Leavy (1163) 0.5-0.5 Dermot Earls (1200) M Molloy (1000) 0-1 Niall O'Shea (1109) The Curragh travelled to Kilbarrack for a very rewarding afternoon scoring five wins and one draw. The match was closer than the score would suggest with Mark and Noel both in severe difficulty at one stage.
Curragh v Rathmines - Round 1 - 10th October 2004 Curragh v Rathmines Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 G Walsh (1517) Mark McLoughlin (1549) 1-0 J O'Connell (1471) Noel Lynch (1396) 1-0 N Whelan (1411) Peter Klompers (1322) 1-0 P Freer (1455) Dermot Earls (u/r) 0-1 J Maher (1457) Niall O'Shea (1109) 0.5-0.5 P Bishop (1354)
The Curragh had a good start to the season with 4 wins, 1 loss and a draw against a well balanced Rathmines side. The result could have gone either way with Richard and Mark scraping wins in difficult circumstances and Niall obtaining a draw when his opponent could not convert a bishop and pawn v pawn endgame into a win as Niall kept his King in the corner with his opponent unable to capitalise with the wrong squared bishop.
Noel scored yet another win to continue his unbeaten run for the Curragh since 2002. Peter and his opponent had time to adjourn their game for a coffee break (not something that even the LCU rules thought of!) Round 2 is on Saturday October 30th away to Naomh Barrog (Kilbarrack). A full league schedule is available at: www.leinsterchess.com Results are posted at: www.geocities.com/chess_ie
Reopening
The Club will reopen for the new season on Thursday 2nd September 2004 at 8 pm. Members meet at the Curragh branch library beside the fire station in the Curragh.
We will be entering two teams in the Leinster League for 2004/05 so new players are very welcome. The teams will be in the Ennis Shield and Bodley Cup.
After winning promotion in 2003 from the O'Hanlon Cup to the Ennis Shield, the club put in a strong performance throughout the season but failed at the last hurdle to gain promotion to Division 2 with a defeat to Dublin University.
Richard Arundell scored 8.5/11 during the season and Noel Lynch was undefeated with a score also of 8.5/11. Both players won board prizes for a 75% performance. Other team members were Mark McLoughlin, Peter Klompers, Derek Stacey and Niall O'Shea.
Making a welcome return to the team was Billy O'Connor who substituted twice winning on both occasions.
The Club hopes to enter two teams in the Leinster Leagues for 2004/05.
