Ennis Shield 2004/05 & Bodley Cup 2004/05

Bothe Curragh teams were at home today:- Ennis Shield 2004/05 Round 9 - 9 April 2005 Curragh v Finglas Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 Mark McLoughlin (1549) 0-1 Noel Lynch (1392) 0-1 Peter Klompers (1322) 1-0 Niall O'Shea (1109) 1-0 Dermot Earls This was an important game between the Curragh and Finglas who were both on 31 points at the start of the day and the Curragh kept the initiative before next week's final games. Noel's unbeaten run came to an end when he fell into an opening trap which left his King on the run for much of the game. Peter and Niall both had good results against stronger opponents. Richard had a comfortable win while I lost a tight game when my opponents two bishops were too strong against my bishop and knight. Bodley Cup 2004/05 Round 6 - 9 April 2005 Curragh v Ballinasloe Brendan Duffy 1-0 Patrick Launders Derek Stacey 1-0 Eamonn Launders Noel Kelly 1-0 Kevin Kinsella Hugue Hammound 0.5-0.5 Sam Hobbs David Thorpe 0-1 Sophie Hobbs The second team also got a good result today with a 3.5-1.5 win against Ballinasloe. A first outing for new player Huge Hammound who managed a draw.

Good results on the other boards against a full strength Drogheda side. Noel is still unbeaten.... Curragh are still in second place but with a game more than everyone else played. Ennis Shield 2004/05 - Round 7

Curragh v Phibsboro Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 Mark McLoughlin (1549 0-1 Noel Lynch (1396) 0.5-0.5 Peter Klompers (1322) 0-1 Dermot Earls (1200) 0.5-0.5 Niall O'Shea (1109) 0-1 A bad day's work for the Curragh managing only 2 points against Phibsboro. Mark and Niall had dreadful games barely surviving the opening while Peter blundered into an easy trap. At least there was the consolation of watching Ireland beat Scotland at Murrayfield.

Charlie Talbot and Derek Stacey's rust has come off and both are back to winning ways. A first outing for junior Luke Heffernan who will learn a lot from today's game. LHeffernan.jpg Luke Heffernan

Ennis Shield 2004/05 - Round 6

Curragh v St. Benildus Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 Mark McLoughlin (1549) 0.5/0.5 Noel Lynch (1396) 1-0 Peter Klompers (1322) 0-1 Dermot Earls (1200) 0.5/0.5 Brendan Duffy (u/g) 0-1 Total Score: 24.5/36 A bit disappointing for the Curragh who have now lost some ground on the leaders. Richard had a solid win while Mark could only manage a draw despite a strong position throughout the game. Noel was under pressure during the game and did well to win in the end while Peter's position fell apart in the endgame. Substitute Brendan went a pawn down early on and never recovered. Black to move (Richard) missed a win in two moves early in his game. Would a two year old child miss it!!! 22.01.05.jpg Qxf2+

Ennis Shield 2004/05 - Round 3

Curragh v Gonzaga - Round 3 - 13th November 2004 Curragh v Gonzaga Richard Arundell (1749) 0-1 G. Nerney Mark McLoughlin (1549) 1-0 R. Collins Noel Lynch (1396) 0.5-0.5 R. Crowley Peter Klompers (1322) 0.5-0.5 E. Hadfield Dermot Earls (1200) 1-0 P. Aronna Niall O'Shea (1109) 1-0 Default The Curragh were pleased to come out of this one with a win with some very hard fought games against the Dublin college side. Richard succumbed to a complicated kingside attack and sacrifice while Noel was unable to take advantage of a pawn advantage, the game ending in a draw in the middle game. Peter and his opponent agreed a draw in a tricky game. There were good wins for Mark and Dermot with Niall picked up his easiest points of the season with a default.

Meanwhile Ireland were beating South Africa in Lansdowne Road - Good day all round. Total Score: 14/18 (After 3 rounds) A full league schedule is available at: www.leinsterchess.com Results are posted at: www.geocities.com/chess_ie

Ennis Shield 2004/05 Round 2

Naomh Barrog v Curragh - Round 2 - 29th October 2004 Naomh Barrog v Curragh David Eccles (1357) 0-1 Richard Arundell (1749) PC Quinn (1345) 0-1 Mark McLoughlin (1549) M O'Dwyer (1226) 0-1 Noel Lynch (1396) J Rafferty (1163) 0-1 Peter Klompers (1322) P Leavy (1163) 0.5-0.5 Dermot Earls (1200) M Molloy (1000) 0-1 Niall O'Shea (1109) The Curragh travelled to Kilbarrack for a very rewarding afternoon scoring five wins and one draw. The match was closer than the score would suggest with Mark and Noel both in severe difficulty at one stage.

Ennis Shield 2004/05 Round 1

Curragh v Rathmines - Round 1 - 10th October 2004 Curragh v Rathmines Richard Arundell (1749) 1-0 G Walsh (1517) Mark McLoughlin (1549) 1-0 J O'Connell (1471) Noel Lynch (1396) 1-0 N Whelan (1411) Peter Klompers (1322) 1-0 P Freer (1455) Dermot Earls (u/r) 0-1 J Maher (1457) Niall O'Shea (1109) 0.5-0.5 P Bishop (1354)

The Curragh had a good start to the season with 4 wins, 1 loss and a draw against a well balanced Rathmines side. The result could have gone either way with Richard and Mark scraping wins in difficult circumstances and Niall obtaining a draw when his opponent could not convert a bishop and pawn v pawn endgame into a win as Niall kept his King in the corner with his opponent unable to capitalise with the wrong squared bishop.

Noel scored yet another win to continue his unbeaten run for the Curragh since 2002. Peter and his opponent had time to adjourn their game for a coffee break (not something that even the LCU rules thought of!) Round 2 is on Saturday October 30th away to Naomh Barrog (Kilbarrack).
