€200,000 to be provided by Council to develop pitches at Loughnamona

Cllr Catherine Murphy has welcomed news that Kildare County Council is to provide €200,000 towards the cost of developing amenity lands at Loughnamona, Leixlip. The land in question was originally zoned amenity in the mid 90’s to compliment residential rezoning that occurred at the same time. This amenity land was to provide for the recreational needs of new residents in the Easton Road. In the years since then more than 1,300 houses/apartments have been constructed and occupied in housing estates such as Rinawade, Glen Easton, Easton Mews, Loughnamona etc. however, the amenity land had to date remained undeveloped.
Weeds that have grown to head height currently cover the “amenity” land, there is also a constant problem with vermin such as rats throughout this neglected site. The green spaces in Loughnamona housing estate are exclusively maintained, to a very high standard, by their active residents association. For many years the residents there have felt let down by the Council due to the unsightly state of the “amenity” land. News that this land is finally going to be developed will be received with much relief by those who face on to this eyesore.
In July the Council agreed to provide a lease to Leixlip United and Leixlip Town Football Clubs, both clubs had secured lottery funding for the development of this land, however, the promised matching funds from Kildare County Council was put on hold earlier this year. It is now very welcome news that €200,000 is being released in order to ensure the lands are put to their original intended use
