3268 PENALTY POINTS ISSUED TO KILDARE MOTORISTS ON ONE STRETCH OF ROAD

Kildare motorists have to date  amassed in excess of 37,000 penalty points, most of them  for speeding.   When the figures are more closely examined they  show 56 hot spots where more than 100 penalty points were issued,  in total 13,088 penalty points were issued at these 56 locations.   When they are more closely examined they show  one section of road alone accounted for 3268 penalty points,  ironically it is one of the widest safest stretches of road in the country.  I refer to the road between the Red Cow Roundabout and the Kildare County Boundary.

ALLOTMENTS PLAN DUE MID FEBRUARY

According to Cllr Catherine Murphy there has been considerable interest in the Council’s plan to develop allotments in North Kildare.   While the decision has been made in principle,  details are currently being worked through.    Issues such as access,  availability of water and  disposal of waste are all currently being considered.

Murphy slates Minister Brady for welcoming funding cuts to Kildare

Cllr Catherine Murphy has severely criticised Minister Aine Brady,  who issued a statement welcoming the allocation from the Local Government Fund of €25,532,785 to Kildare County Council.     This allocation, according to Cllr Murphy,  in fact represents a significant reduction for the second year in a row and  compares very unfavourably with other Council’s.    The Local Government fund is primarily made up from  motor tax;  Kildare is one of the few Counties that pay more into the fund than we get back,  with the balance of our motor tax being allocated to other counties.

Cllr Murphy  has stated that Minister Brady either doesn’t know what she is talking about or it’s a bare faced attempt, by her,  to deflect the bad news of reduced services  by blaming Kildare County Council for miss management of resources.  In her statement she says   “the people of Kildare can be confident that local government will have the resources available to provide the range and quality of services that they expect and demand” .

Council services to suffer due to unfair distribution of Local Government Fund

In a statement Cllr Catherine Murphy has yet again highlighted the unfairness to Kildare in relation to the allocation from the Local Government Fund.   Having looked at the  2009 allocation,  which is due to be slashed by a further 10% in 2010,  she found that Kildare is 4th from the bottom in the league table. Further cuts will have  a very direct impact on the services Kildare County Council provides,  most of these are basic front line services such as the provision of clean water;  sewage disposal;  libraries;  fire services;  school wardens;  road and footpath maintenance etc.

The Local Government Fund is primarily made up of motor tax receipts,  however,   some Counties like Kildare pay far more into the fund  than they get out.     In 2009  the County received €150.30 per person with the average payment being  €213.78  the difference being  over €10m annually.     “While there was an expectation that cuts were inevitable the very least we should expect is that the pain is fairly applied.”

Reinstatement works in Maynooth following major sewage upgrade works

Bandstand_Maynooth.jpg

According to Cllr Catherine Murphy,  the appointment of a contractor to carry out reinstatement works in Maynooth following the completion of works associated with the upgrade of the lower Liffey Regional Waste Water works,   is imminent.    This work will include the removal of the bandstand and the restoration of Pound Park.

Strong case for deferring Local Area Plans

Cllr Catherine Murphy has strongly argued that  Local Area Plans currently proceeding through the planning process should be deferred.    Plans for Celbridge/Leixlip/Collinstown together seek to rezone land to accommodate more than 2500 new houses/apartments over the next six years.  This would allow for an increased population of in  excess of 5,500.   Little or no account has been taken of the changed economic environment or the fact that emigration and not immigration is taking place.

Kildare and Elections

Kildare is divided into two areas ("constituencies") called Kildare North and Kildare South for General (Dáil) Elections. If you’re not sure which constituency in which you live, you can check the Kildare Towns (under construction) section of the site. Alternatively you contact Kildare County Council (045 980200 / www.kildare.ie/countycouncil) or my own office and we should be able to help.

Kildare TDs

I am one of the 3 TDs who currently serve Kildare North; the other two representatives for the area are Bernard Durkan of Fine Gael and Emmett Stagg of the Labour Party. Kildare South has a further 3 TDs, Seán Ó Fearghail and Seán Power of Fianna Fáil, and Jack Wall of the Labour Party. There are 166 TDs in total; their profiles can be viewed by visiting www.oir.ie.

Due to recent population growth and the relocation of a small area of the South Kildare Constituency to Kildare North, Kildare North will be represented by 4 TDs from the next General Election onward, which is a very positive step. It’s extremely important that the number of TDs representing each constituency is based on the number of people living in that constituency and that this increases or decreases when there’s a significant change in population numbers. However it’s hugely unfair that those living on the border between Kildare North & South keep being moved from one constituency to another. Hopefully this will be the last boundary change between Kildare North and Kildare South.

Local Government

Leixlip is served by both Kildare County Council and Leixlip Town Council.

Kildare County Council

Kildare is divided into six electoral divisions comprising a total of 25 County Councillors. Leixlip and Maynooth combine to make up the Leixlip Electoral Area, which is served by 4 County Councillors.

Leixlip Town Council
Established as a Town Commission in 1988 this Local Authority was reclassified as Leixlip Town Council in 1999 and comprises 9 members.  Due to its former Town Commission status, Leixlip Town Council has very limited powers and a small budget, however in spite of these drawbacks it has been a very positive force in the development of Leixlip and is a highly valued institution.
