Cllr Catherine Murphy has urged Dublin Bus to rethink the withdrawal of the Nightlink service between Monday and Friday to North Kildare. Following complaints made to her by constituents Cllr Murphy contacted the company both to complain and to seek the restoration or part restoration of the service.
67N served Lucan, Leixlip and Celbridge 6 nights each week, it will now be confined to Friday and Saturday nights. The Monday to Thursday service operated at 12.30 and 2pm from the City Centre, with more extensive weekend services. The 66N will continue to operate on Friday and Saturday as before. The Nightlink is the first North Kildare service to be affected by the cutback in Government subvention to the Company. Cllr Murphy has been told by a Company Representative that talks are ongoing about further changes, with particular attention being paid to poorly supported off-peak services, with a view to withdrawing same.
Cllr Murphy has urged the Company to rethink the complete withdrawal of the Mon-Friday Nightlink, with perhaps, the reintroduction of the Thursday Service. At a time when the purse strings are tight there is a real opportunity for Dublin Bus to attract new bus customers, who may not be able to afford taxi services. The nightlink is a popular service which has resulted in many people leaving the car at home rather than risking drinking and driving, it is used by people who work evening shifts in town, and also offers the opportunity to those who work weekends the opportunity to socialise during the week in the city. The loss of this service will also become much more noticeable during the summer months when the level of usage is likely to be higher.
While the Nightlink is the first of the public transport services to be affected by the cut in the subvention to public transport, it comes at a time when public transport could be seen as a viable option to households who may have to rethink the family finances, particularly with regards to the second car, there may be a lost opportunity to attract new customers on to public transport, with the added benefit of reducing the annual need to purchase carbon credits, Cllr Murphy concludes.
Loss of Weekday Night Link Bus Services to North Kildare very regrettable |
