Kildare Dance Summer School

The Kildare Dance Summer School was established in 2003 as a bi-annual event at NUI Maynooth. The Summer School programme is based on Laban fundamentals i.e. The Body, Space, Effort, Relationship. It was initially devised in order to provide Laban Guild Community Dance Leader Course participants with the opportunity to attend a Summer School in Ireland. (Attendance at an approved Summer School is required as part of this course). However it has attracted a much broader range of people and is open to those with no previous experience of dance or Laban's work.

Toolbox of Dance: Exploring Dance with Disability with Colm Gallagher

Toolbox of Dance was a three-day Dance with Disability workshop led by Colm Gallagher, (Education Director, AMICI Dance), which took place in Monasterevin, Co Kildare in September 2006.  The creative process used by AMICI is open and allowed any individual to experience, share and develop his or her own style, direction and movement vocabulary.  A widely experienced dance facilitator, Colm provided a safe environment for this to happen.

Participants on Toolbox of Dance workshop included those with physical, sensory or learning disability, people with mental health problems and people who don’t.  Support staff for service users, or anyone with a openness to the unexpected and an attention to the unusual also participated.

It is envisaged that this workshop will act as a springboard for further work in the field of Dance with Disability – training, performance and networking.

This initiative was presented by Kildare County Council, in association with SCJM Moore Abbey Services.

AMICI DANCE THEATRE COMPANY
AMICI is a unique dance theatre company integrating able bodied and disabled artists and performers.  This extraordinary mix of people makes the company unique. Founded in 1980, its productions and workshops challenge conventional attitudes about disability and the arts.  AMICI is the resident community arts company at The Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith.  Presently Amici has a sister company in Sri Lanka called Butterflies and also work extensively in Japan.

COLM GALLAGHER WORKSHOP FACILITATOR
Colm Gallagher worked as a carer in Stewarts Hospital Palmerstown Dublin.  To develop his work in the arts and disability work, he moved to England and met Wolfgang Stange, Artistic Director of AMICI Dance Theatre Company in 1988… thus begins a life changing moment.

Currently the Education Director with AMICI, Colm has worked and taught on many projects in Germany, Ireland, Austria, Poland, USA, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria and most recently Egypt.  Much in demand as a workshop leader in England, he teaches Dance Drama in South Thames College.  Colm has worked with the EU as apart of the Socrates ProgrammE.  He contributed to a recently published book ‘RE-Envisioning Dance’ by Jane Elin, USA.

Performances include:
The Dream of Friends by Caravanna 2000 and Amici (Gdansk); 20/20 Amici (London and Berlin) 2000;  Time Step Amici (London) 2003;  Water Garden & Friends AMICI (Fukuoko Japan) 2004;  (Chelmsford London & Norwich 2005);  Stars are out Tonight AMICI London (2005);  The Offering AMICI London (2005 & 2006)

PLATFORM I MUSIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

The Music Suite @ Leixlip Library

Commencing in September 2006, Leixlip Library played host to some of the finest musicians in the country for an innovative music development programme.

PLATFORM I was a series of monthly workshops featuring the cream of Irish singer songwriter talent including Steve and Joe Wall, (Stunning, The Walls), Mundy, Declan O’Rourke, Ollie Cole, with Marilyn Bane. This series provided a unique opportunity for those who have ever wanted to pick up a guitar or sing their own song while learning from the masters.

The intimate surroundings of the Leixlip Library and Arts facility provided the perfect backdrop to listen to, debate with and mostly be inspired by Irelands leading musicians and songwriters.

platform1.jpg

Platform I was the first stage of a long-term music development initiative that is being funded by the Kildare County Council.

Platform II, a Battle of the Bands competition, to select two Kildare bands to perform at the New Band Stage at Oxegen 2007, followed this initiative.

Platform III, a music development programme, based in the Music Suite @ Leixlip Library, which centres on song writing, mentoring and recording, for emerging bands from Co Kildare, will be launched shortly.

Ceol Galore

a recording of traditional music by local musicians

RIVERBANK ARTS CENTRE, FRIDAY 17th NOVEMBER 2006, 8pm

The Ceol Galore cd will be available for sale on the launch night

From here to there  ……

From as local as Kildare, and as close to home as Carlow, and as far a field as Grand Villers, France, the Ceol Galore traditional musicians have performed on festival stages, in Fleadhs and in sitting rooms, overlooking the tropical island at Glengariff, the mountains in Bavaria and the Curragh of Kildare.

The Ceol Galore musicians hail from the Kildare area.  Like many traditional musicians, they met through seisuins in local venues.

In 2005, Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge, invited Ceol Galore to host a monthly traditional music series called ‘Rambling House’.  The Ceol Galore bands recording project was initiated and funded by Kildare County Council to acknowledge their support of the Rambling House programme.

This initiative provided an opportunity for local musicians to strengthen and develop their practice, through interaction with and mentoring from a professional musician, Frankie Lane, and to provide a unique recording opportunity in Co Kildare.  The resulting cd, entitled ‘Ceol Galore’ will be launched in Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge, Co. Kildare, on Friday 17th November 2006, 8pm

Frankie Lane is an established solo musician and composer.  He is the original front-man for the legendary Fleadh Cowboys.  He has recorded with the Chieftains and The Dubliners on their most recent albums.  In 2005, Frankie and Paul Kelly toured extensively with ex- De Danann singer Eleanor Shanley in Ireland as well as Holland and Denmark. Frankie is a renowned producer and director of some of Ireland's leading music artists and has most recently recorded albums, both playing arranging and engineering, for Áine Uí Cheallaigh (the original sean nós singer of Riverdance), Paul O' Shaughnessy (ex ALTAN), Rosena Horan, Alan Kelly, Helen Lane and Sonny Condell.

According to Frankie, the Ceol Galore project ‘was one the most challenging but rewarding projects that I have been involved in’.

The Ceol Galore musicians are

Barry Keatley  (vocals, bodhran, jews harp)
Martin Conroy  (vocals, guitar, mandolin)
Roddy Geoghagan  (vocals, 12 string guitar, banjo)
Millie Gill  (accordian)
Joanne Lanigan  (tin whistle, piano accordian, organ)
Thomas Murphy  (fiddle, djembe)
