Maynooth Film For All, screens Gabrielle

Gabrielle

Maynooth Film For All, Film Club screens Gabrielle on Thursday 10th April in John Hume Building JHL2, NUI Maynooth. New members always welcome.

Set in early twentieth - century France's opulent belle époque, Gabrielle is the tale of a marriage that unravels and spins wildly out of control. Adapted from Joseph Conrad's short story The Return, director Patrice Chereau's film is an exploration of the emotions hidden just below the surface.

"Gabrielle" begins and ends with the performances of its two stars: Isabelle Huppert and Pascal Gregory. Huppert is alternately steely, vulnerable, vindictive, and kind; Greggory for his part perfectly adapts to be her foil. The film is a psychological thriller in the classic sense, heavy on dialogue and essentially devoid of violence; as Jean and his wife Gabrielle orbit each other with murderous looks, they are plainly incapable of making any physical contact.

Every unhappy marriage is unhappy in its own way. When love dies, earlier intimacy empowers each partner with an almost forensic insight into precisely how and where to hurt the other most...........ask Paul McCartney!!

Dr Michael O'Dwyer of the French Department will introduce the film and Denis Condon Centre for Media Studies, NUI Maynooth will facilitate a short discussion following the viewing. Payment can be made on the night.
