MAYNOOTH FILM FOR ALL: FILM CLUB 2009 / 2010

Screening: Breakfast at Tiffany’s
When: Wednesday 3rd February 2010
Where: JHL2 John Hume Building, North Campus, NUI Maynooth
Time: 7.45pm

Maynooth Film for All: Film Club screens the stylish classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s on Wednesday 3rd February at 7.45pm in JHL2 NUI Maynooth.
The movie's bittersweet romance, and its great sense of hip and heartless New York society in the late 1950s make Breakfast at Tiffany's a film that's still well worth watching.

Blake Edwards's adaptation of Truman Capote's classic novella is ideally cast with Audrey Hepburn in the role of Holly Golightly. Capote had always envisioned Marilyn Monroe in the part, and felt betrayed by the studio when Hepburn was cast. Yet the choice was inspired.

Hepburn holds the movie together in the role that defined her career. She brings a disarming artlessness to Holly and looks fabulous in her sophisticated clothes. Waving a long black cigarette holder around, and spouting odd little bits of French (calling one aggressive suitor "quel beast"). Yet she seems to float untouched above the seamier aspects of her life, only occasionally letting us see her vulnerability and loneliness. And despite all the glamorous party clothes, she's just as charming wearing a pair of jeans and a simple shirt when she sings the movie's hit song,” Moon River."

The movie is almost, but not quite, ruined by Mickey Rooney's hideously stereotyped performance as Hepburn's Japanese neighbour. Intended to provide broad comedy at the time, the scenes provoke intense discomfort today.

Movies are screened in JHL2 lecture hall in the John Hume building, North Campus, NUIM. The programme starts at 7.45pm with an introduction from Dr Denis Condon NUIM. The featured film then begins at 8.00pm.

MAYNOOTH FILM FOR ALL: FILM CLUB 2009 / 2010

Screening: The Class – Entre Les Murs
When: Wednesday 13th January 2010
Where: JHL2 John Hume Building, North Campus, NUI Maynooth
Time: 7.45pm

Maynooth Film for All: Film Club will screen the Oscar nominated French film The Class (Entre Les Murs) on Wednesday 13th January at 7.45pm in JHL2 NUI Maynooth.
The idealistic young teacher reaching out to a troubled class of underprivileged kids - it should be the dullest movie cliche imaginable. Yet French director Laurent Cantet does something miraculous with it in this fresh piece of humanist, realist, optimist cinema, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2008.
The Class is based on an autobiographical novel by author and former teacher François Bégaudeau, about working at a tough multi-ethnic school in a Parisian suburb. Remarkably, Bégaudeau plays himself, or a version of himself; he does it very well, although as teaching is all about putting on a performance commanding enough to subdue the toughest audiences, maybe that shouldn't surprise us. His class of 14 to 15 year old kids in the film is made up of non-professionals, and their unobtrusively superb and authentic classroom scenes have evidently been devised through improvisation.
This all gives The Class a near-documentary feel, making it a unique interweaving of fiction and reality, as when some real-life parents of the kids are also brought into the story.
Bégaudeau is François Marin, a slim, boyish thirty something teacher of French language and literature. We encounter him in the classroom, the staff-room and in the schoolyard, but never at home. We never find out about his home life or his personal life, though one pupil offers a cheeky speculation, which is to be subtly important. His sole moment of privacy is glimpsed at the very beginning of the film: having a coffee before gearing himself up for the fray.
It’s a complex picture, and although the film puts the spotlight on a disciplinary appeals procedure unduly weighted towards the punitive, there are certainly no easy answers on display — just burning compassion, mercurial humour and a fundamental recognition that these kids are our future.
Movies are screened in JHL2 lecture hall in the John Hume building, North Campus, NUIM. The programme starts at 7.45pm with an introduction from Dr Denis Condon NUIM. The featured film then begins at 8.00pm.

Maynooth Film for All: Film Club will screen “Encounters at the End of the World” on Wednesday 9th December at 8.00pm in JHL2 NUI Maynooth. The McMurdo Research Station in inhospitable Antarctica seems a magnet for the dreamers and eccentrics who are director Werner Herzog’s kind of people. In this witty, wise documentary he does double duty as director and quizzical on–screen guide.
Herzog travels to Antarctica accompanied only by his cameraman and is given unprecedented access to the hidden society of one thousand men and women living there and risking their lives and sanity to conduct cutting-edge scientific research.
Starting from McMurdo Station which reminds him of “an ugly mining town”, Herzog travels between the main scientific bases narrating his thoughts in a dry sarcastic style. The documentary displays Antarctica’s stark beauty on land as well as the mysterious creatures and ice structures underwater. But, equally, tries to examine the people working there, their dreams and why they’re currently working at the ultimate destination for wanderers seeking solitude far from the madding crowd.
Herzog interviews several people including the driver of ‘Ivan the Terra Bus’ - a former banker/US Peace Corp volunteer and a bobcat driver who was previously a philosopher. These people are professional dreamers who have found their ideal place to live amongst a workforce of PhD’s who wash dishes and linguists on a continent without an indigenous language
Movies are screened in JHL2 lecture hall in the John Hume building, North Campus, NUIM. The programme starts at 7.45pm with an introduction from Dr Denis Condon NUIM. The featured film then begins at 8.00pm.

The Mayor of County Kildare, Councillor Colm Purcell with special guest Luka Bloom launched the 'Hidden Wonders of Kildare' - a new publication documenting a Kildare County Council 'Critical Debate and Public Art Project' in the Nás na Ríogh community centre in Naas on Friday 4th December.

The launch was attended by many of the nominators and their families, local historians, Kildare County Council staff and other interested parties.

The Mayor acknowledged the Nás na Ríogh development as one of the ‘Hidden Wonders’ and Kildare County Councils’ commitment to the development such that the local authority used its own capital fund to enable the project to progress in 2009.

The ‘Hidden Wonders of Kildare ’ project invited nominations of ‘Hidden Wonders’ from inhabitants, workers and visitors of Kildare in an aim to find, acknowledge and raise the profile of their hidden wonders that are particularly unique to Kildare.

Initiated by Public Art Co-ordinator, Rina Whyte and facilitated by artist Rowena Keaveny, ‘Hidden Wonders of Kildare’ attracted 60 nominations from approximately 40 people. Nominations varied from places of tranquillity such as the Curragh Plains, to pubs such as ‘Roches’ of Donadea (the sinking pub!), Nepalese and Traveller culture in Kildare, many historic buildings and the story of the Wren Women on The Curragh. Nominators included artists, local historians, school children, voluntary organisations and other interested parties.

The project has now been documented in photography, personalised quotations and portraits in the publication 'Hidden Wonders of Kildare' which is available from Rina Whyte rwhyte@kildarecoco.ie 045 448316

Screening: Lemon Tree
When: Wednesday 4th November 2009
Where: JHL2 John Hume Building, North Campus, NUI Maynooth
Time: 7.45pm

An Israeli film, The Lemon Tree set on the border between Israel and the West Bank, is Maynooth Film For All, Film Clubs’ next screening on Wednesday next 4th November.
The film tells the story of Salma, a Palestinian widow, who enters into a dispute with her new neighbour - the Israeli Defense Minister! His new house is situated opposite her lemon grove, on the green line border between Israel and the West Bank. The Israeli security forces are quick to declare that the lemon trees pose a threat to the Minister's safety and issue orders to uproot them.
Together with her young Palestinian lawyer, Salma goes all the way to the Israeli Supreme Court to try to save her trees. Her struggle raises the interest of Mira Navon, the Defense minister's wife, who is trapped in her new home and in an unhappy life. Despite their differences and the borders between them the two women develop an invisible bond. Salma's legal and personal journey leads her deep into the complex, dark, and sometimes funny chaos of the ongoing struggle in the Middle East, in which all players find themselves alone in their struggle to survive.
The rare ability to make intelligent, entertaining cinema from hot-button current issues is beautifully illustrated by Lemon Tree, and its director Eran Riklis. This is an effective film about how war can affect ordinary people. Aside from the odd false note, it’s a gentle and bittersweet film, subtle and even-handed, with no preachiness or sentimentality.
The film won the respected Audience Award at the influential Berlin Film Festival in 2008. Read actress Hiam Abbass (who plays Salma) interview with the Irish Time’s Donald Clarke
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/theticket/2008/1128/1227739045484.html

This chilling first feature by Juan Antonio Bayona plays with Victorian ideas of fantasy and moral punishment, while stitching in contemporary concerns: child abuse, feminist guilt and the impact of surveillance technology figure prominently. The result is not for the faint of heart. The Orphanage is frequently quite scary – a feeling that lingers long after its haunting, luminous final shot.

The story concerns the goings-on at an abandoned orphanage that saw some evildoings during the Franco regime. One of the former residents, the lovely Laura (Belén Rueda), returns to the abandoned estate with her husband and sensitive son. But the youngster quickly begins seeing – and then playing with – a group of malicious children, who may or may not be in his imagination. When he disappears one day, Laura comes to suspect that these children were part of her life too, once upon a time.

Intelligent genre filmmaking requires perfect execution from all quarters. The Orphanage manages that, with a particular emphasis on performance. Rueda is incredible; her creepy obsessiveness gradually overcomes us. We begin to believe the impossible through her sheer force of will. - Diana Sanchez / Toronto Film Festival Programme
