Neighbours

Neighbours

Project Title: ‘Neighbours’

Artist: Aileen-Anne Brannigan, commissioned under the Per Cent for Art Scheme

Year of Installation: 2008 (May)

Location: Coarsemoor Housing Estate, Straffan, Co. Kildare

Medium:  Kilkenny Limestone

Size: 2 Blocks of stone measuring:
600mmX600mmX600mm and 600mmX400mmX400mm

Artists Statement: My initial thoughts were primarily of the location and to include the older and larger housing estate with the newer smaller housing estate - this led to the idea of creating two pieces of work which would relate to each other.

The idea of neighbours sharing a chat and a cup of tea was the inspiration for the almost teacup like form that I used.

The patterns and spiral designs are something I include in a lot of my    work.  In this project, I wanted them to have meaning and for the     residents to enjoy the knowledge of the mystery of the spirals.

One of the last things I do with work like this is the open chisel work to the background of the carved pattern work.  This is a technique I have    been developing over the last few years. This open chisel work     exposes the natural stone, so often lost in the process of creating the work - for me, the art work comes alive when I use this technique.

A big THANK YOU to Kildare Co. Council for giving me
the opportunity
to create artwork for this public space
I have really enjoyed the process of creating this work,
and I believe it has played an important role in my development
as an artist.

Neil Delamare to MC Oxegen Battle of the Bands 08

Kildare Arts Service is excited to announce that Neil Delamare will MC this year's Platform III Oxegen Battle of the Bands Final to be held in Time Venue Naas this Thursday June 5th. Due to unforeseen circumstance PJ Gallagher had to step down for this year's competition leaving the final in Neil's very capable hands. Fresh from the Cat Laughs Festival in Kilkenny, Neil's appearance promises to make this an event not to be missed. Neil is also basking in the success of a recent sell out run in Vicar Street. The combination of one of Ireland's top comedians and the cream of Kildare's music talent ensures that this Thursday June 5th in Time: Venue is a night not to be missed.

This year, five bands have been chosen to compete in Time for a coveted spot on the new band stage at Oxegen this summer. Bright Light Fiasco, Lines Drawing Circles, Mary Bellos and Schmackey and the Salads and The Kill City Defectors are due to take to the stage and Thursday evening.

Doors open at 8:30 and the first band is due to take the stage at 9pm. Tickets €14 at the door.

Kildare County Council Launches When We Danced - a new dance publication

When We Danced Book Launch

When We Danced a new dance publication published by Kildare County Council’s Arts Service was launched on Sunday 30 March at a reception in NUI Maynooth. The publication documents in visuals and written word Kildare County Council’s extensive Dance Development Programme over the past ten years and its successful collaboration with the Laban Guild, an organisation promoting the work of Rudolf Laban, a major pioneer in the evolution of Modern Dance. The author, Louise Costelloe, received a Dance Criticism award in 2005 from the Laban Guild which led to this writing commission by Kildare County Council.

Anna Carlisle MBE, president of the Laban Guild launched the book during ‘Laban in Practice’, a weekend of Laban based dance workshops at NUI Maynooth. The weekend programme also included a lunchtime performance of Pieces of Elsewhere, a new work by Counterbalance, Ireland’s first integrated dance company, the screening of Shade a new dance film by Louise Costelloe and an awards ceremony for recent graduates of the Laban Guild’s Community Dance Leaders Course in Newbridge.

'Making Inroads: An Arts Development Plan for Kildare County Council 2006-2011’ is centred around strategic partnerships for the arts. The support of the Arts Council and the Laban Guild was fundamental to the success of the Dance Development Programme to date and Kildare County Council looks forward to further developing and extending the dance programme in the future.
