Kildare County Council Dance Development Programme

Kildare County Council's Dance Development programme centres on the exploration of contemporary dance and the provision of community dance training for dancers, artists and facilitators.

The extensive dance programme can be mapped as follows:dance.jpg

  • A three year Dance Artist in Residence programme with Cathy O’Kennedy, took place, with initiatives in primary and secondary schools in the county.
  • The accredited Laban Guild Community Dance Leaders Course Level 1 commenced in 2002-2003, attracting dancers, artists, teachers and community workers from across Ireland.   A second Level 1 course commenced in 2006.
  • The Kildare Dance Summer School at NUI Maynooth was established as a two- yearly event, taking place in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
  • The intermediary Laban Guild Community Dance Leaders Course Level 2 took place in 2005.
  • Louise Costello, dancer and award recipient of Laban Guild Dance Criticism Award, was commissioned to document the relationship between Kildare County Council and the Laban Guild in 2006.  This commission led to the publication of When We Danced in March 2008.
  • Arising from the Dance Summer School, AMICI dancer, Colm Gallagher hosted a Dance with Disability programme in Moore Abbey, Monasterevin, for service users and staff in healthcare settings.
  • In March 2008, 'Laban in Practice' a dance workshop weekend was hosted by the Arts Service in NUI Maynooth. During this event When We Danced, a new publication documenting Kildare’s Dance Development Programme, was launched.
  • The ‘If I  had an Artist for a Day ………’ Arts in Education programme includes introductory workshops in contemporary dance, which are in line with the Primary School Curriculum.
