The existential choices facing the UK and its implications for Ireland and the EU

On Tuesday, 26 April, Maynooth University will host a free event to explore the implications of a potential vote in favour of a British exit from the European Union. There are numerous questions upon which to reflect as the date of the referendum looms ever closer.
- Was Cameron’s much vaunted reform deal of any real substance or simply an affirmation of pre-existing arrangements?
- More importantly, how do the British electorate perceive this deal?
- Will it constitute a persuasive enough reason to remain within the EU?
- And most crucially of all, what are the prospects of a No vote winning out, and what would the aftermath of such an eventuality imply for the rest of the European Union, not least Ireland?
This timely event will address and hopefully bring clarity to some of these issues through an afternoon of discussion.
The event will take the form of a panel discussion, to be moderated by Irish Times Economics Editor, Arthur Beesly, with contributions from leading scholars and practitioners. We will also hear from a high-ranking British official.
