Athy shines at Barrow Awards Scheme 2015

Local community awarded for waterways projects...

The winners of the Barrow Awards Scheme 2015 were announced at special ceremony on Thursday night, October 29th in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow town. The Barrow Awards Scheme rewards towns and villages along the River Barrow for maintaining and enhancing the natural resources of the river and also encourages communities to develop more amenities within a suitable distance of the river.

The 2015 Awards were organised in co-operation with the Local Authorities in Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Wexford and Waterways Ireland. 2015 sees the completion of the Long Term Projects with a prize of €5,000 and the introduction of the County Council Award for an Industrial/Heritage site of significance.

Entries from participating centres this year included Athy Heritage Centre (Kildare County Council nomination), Rathangan Tidy Towns Association, Portarlington Arts and Heritage Group, Barrowline Cruisers, the North Barrow Branch of the I.W.A.I. (Inland Waterways Association of Ireland), Carlow Graiguecullen Sub Aqua Club, Milford Mill (Carlow County Council nomination) Leighlinbridge Improvement Group, Goresbridge Rural Development, Borris Tidy Towns, Blackstairs Eco Trails,  Pure Adventure,  Graiguenamanagh Regatta and Rowing Club, Waterside Bike and Hike, Doyle’s Bar, St. Mullins Area Recreational Tourism (SMART), Larry’s Barge, Ros Tapestry and The Dunbrody Famine Ship (Wexford County Council nomination) .
