Athy's Shackleton Museum Redevelopment

Public Information Evening

Kildare County Council will host a further public information evening as part of the current planning (Part 8) statutory public consultation process for the proposed redevelopment of the former Town Hall building.

This will take place this evening Tuesday (19th February) at the Athy Heritage Centre Museum, Emily Square, Athy (6pm to 8pm).

Athy hosts the world's only permanent exhibition to the Kilkea-born 20th century Polar explorer Ernest Shackleton. Shackleton’s 1914-16 Endurance Expedition to the Antarctic is regarded as one of the epic stories of human survival. He was recently selected as greatest explorer of the 20th century in a public vote on the BBC2 TV ICONS series.

The plans for the project by the local Athy Heritage Company CLG received a significant boost last when it obtained funding to support the project under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund.

Department of Rural & Community Development. Minister Michael Ring, TD approved an allocation of over €2.7 million to the Council towards an upgrade of the town's historic Emily Square, which will also include initial works at the museum.
