Champion of Mondello titles to be decided this weekend

The first ever season of 'Champion of Mondello' racing comes to an end this Sunday (October 12th)...

At Mondello Park with five titles to be decided by a twelve race programme on the National Track.

The Mondello Park Sports Club will be at the helm for Sunday's event, which will include all of the Champion of Mondello classes, apart from Formula Ford, which completed its campaign at the Leinster Trophy event in September with Stephen Daly taking the title. Joining the championship classes will be a double header for Future Classics and a non-championship Patch Fiesta race.

Of the 'Champion of Mondello' classes Formula Sheane looks on paper to be the most clear cut as Kevin Sheane leads by twenty four points from newly crowned Irish champion Brian Hearty. The class however still has two races to run and both are offering double points, which makes it wide open. With so many points still on offer, along with bonus points for pole position and fastest lap, any one of four drivers could still lift the title.

Formula Vee is another class where double points are on offer and here things are even less settled. Kevin Grogan has a twelve point lead over Stephen Morrin but a further four drivers are also in contention. Formula Libre has two double points races scheduled and this means that a whopping nine drivers are still in contention mathematically. In reality however, the winner should come from the top four of Mark Crawford, Darragh Daly, Tim Buckley and Fergus Faherty.

The remaining championships to be decided are for Sports Cars, with both GT's and Strykers on the programme. In the GT series the multi class format means that a driver from any of the divisions can win, and this has put Pete Murray right in contention in his GT3 car. His rivals will be the two fastest men from the GT1 division, Pat McBennett and Connaire Finn.

The Strykers will be a battle between three drivers who have raced wheel to wheel all season, Alan Watkins, Alan Auerbach and Dave Griffin. With Watkins having pipped them to the National title Auerbach and Griffin will be out to stop him performing a clean sweep.

Racing on Sunday gets under way at 11:00 with four races before lunch and the remaining eight in the afternoon. A provisional event timetable is available on the Mondello Park web site, www.mondellopark.ie.

Admission to the event is just €12.50, with under sixteen's admitted free of charge, and all admission includes a complimentary event programme.
