A website which provides a series of general Irish language proficiency examinations and qualifications for adult learners of Irish. TEG exams give candidates an opportunity to show their ability in speaking, listening, reading and writing Irish at different levels, from absolute beginner to intermediate and advanced levels.
Introducing the event, RTÉ’s Aengus Mac Grianna described TEG’s examinations and qualifications system as “a fantastic opportunity for people to show their language ability with a qualification that is recognised internationally” whatever their level.
Referring to his recent experience in ‘relearning’ the language, guest speaker, Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs, Joe McHugh T.D., described TEG as ‘a path to fluency in Irish through a structured, flexible and graduated system.’
Also speaking at the event, an Coimisinéir Teanga, Rónán Ó Domhnaill, commented on the importance of clear testing systems for employers looking for employees with a proven competence in Irish, citing its importance in strengthening front line Irish language service provision in both the public and private sectors. He drew attention to the availability of partial certification, an innovation in TEG that allows Irish speakers to take the oral exam only.
Over 3,500 Irish language learners have attained TEG certification since 2005. TEG is a system of general language proficiency exams that provide candidates with an opportunity to achieve a qualification that is recognised around the world.
TEG’s new website provides information regarding effective language learning and Irish teaching, with advice for employers with regard to using TEG for recruitment purposes.
