Cody Nally and Carl Phillips celebrate championships wins at Mondello

The 2014 Adelaide Masters Series came to a close in mixed conditions on the Mondello Park International Track today with Cody Nally and Carl Phillips celebrating championships wins and Declan Hoey and Kevin Keyes picking up the 'Cup' awards. Nally from Athlone secured the Superbike crown in Sunday's first race while the day was a lap of honour for Lisburn's Phillips who had clinched the Supersport title in Saturday's opening encounter.

Nally went into the weekend needing only to finish consistently to stay ahead of main rivals Brian McCormack and Marshall Neill in the Adelaide Motorbike Insurance backed championship. Race one, run on Saturday, had seen Nally finish second to Neill with McCormack third. Saturday's result meant that any points finish in the first of Sunday's races would secure the Adelaide Masters Superbike title for Nally and he duly obliged with third place behind Marshall Neill and Jamie Patterson.

With the Superbike crown secured Nally went all out in race three and was involved in a tremendous battle for the lead with Marshall Neill which saw them swapping places at almost every corner. As the battle intensified the skies began to turn grey and spots of rain began to appear. The new champion had wanted to finish the weekend in style, but when Neill had a major off due to the deteriorating conditions, which brought the race to a premature end, Nally was more concerned for Neill's safety than celebrating. In the Superbike 'Cup' Declan Hoey overcame a poor qualifying performance to gather enough points to stay ahead of season long rival Ray Casey and lift the title.

Carl Phillips wrapped up the Adelaide Masters Series Supersport class in the first race of the weekend on Saturday following a relatively comfortable win. Despite the pressure being off, the young champion could not continue his winning ways on Sunday as he had to settle for second place in both races, first behind Jamie Patterson and then behind Jason Lynn. Kevin Keyes had clinched the Supersport 'Cup' at the previous event and even picking up his first non-finish of the season in the final race of the weekend could not take the broad smile off his face.

With the rain continuing to fall and a number of riders having damaged their machines or being un-willing to brave the conditions, the Grand Final took pace with its smallest ever grid. Just eleven bikes took the start and it was Brian McCormack who had the honour of picking up the final win of the season as one by one his challengers slid off.

The full championship points for the Superbike and Supersport classes and all of the support races will be available on the Adelaide Masters web site shortly.
