(By Correne Coetzer) The first Shackleton Award will be awarded to an expedition found to be "real and novel, un-motorized and within polar areas or conditions".
This will take place at Expedition Finse at Finse, Norway, on Saturday February 15th, 2014, on the occasion of the centennial of Ernest Shackleton's visit there.
The organizers are now looking for candidates/nominees; Trygvy K. Norman, one of the organizers, said to ExplorersWeb.
"Nominations are open until December 1st, 2013. The purpose of The Shackleton Award is to honor outstanding expedition achievements and inspire today's explorers to new expeditions into unknown territories or conditions. It will be awarded annually. The Shackleton Award will be awarded to commemorate one of the greatest polar explorers, Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922). His expeditions and leadership qualities have inspired generations, and continue to do so today" stated the organizers.
