Applications Open for Exercise Rider Training Course

Applications Open for Exercise Rider Training Course

Horse Racing Ireland (HRI), through its Careers and Racing Education (CARE) department, in conjunction with RACE, are currently recruiting for an Exercise Riders Training Course which will commence on Monday 31st July.

The four week course will focus on stable management, riding skills, personal fitness as well as providing an industry induction.  Previous riding experience is not required, candidates must be between 17 and 25 years of age and will have to pass a suitability assessment in RACE, Kildare Town. The course is limited to ten places and the closing date for applications is Friday 14th July.

Tanya Moran from Athy, County Kildare, a student on the first edition of the Exercise Rider Training Course in 2016, commented: “I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t done this course. All I’ve ever wanted to do is work with horses but had no previous experience with racehorses. I just applied for the course and following an assessment at RACE I got accepted. After the course I was put into work placement and I am now in full-time employment in a racing yard. I absolutely love my job.”

Patrick Ryan of CARE, said: “The Exercise Riders Training Course is an initiative that is fully funded by CARE and delivered by RACE.  The aim of the course is to alleviate some of the staffing issues being experienced by trainers while also providing a pathway into employment in racing yards for those who may not currently possess the necessary skills or knowledge, but who would like to work in the industry. CARE along with the IRTA, will assist students who successfully complete the course to find employment in the industry.”
