The Classic Director Series is a celebration of the work of some of the most revered yet controversial of Hollywood filmmakers, ranging from the 1950’s Master of Melodrama, Douglas Sirk, to the 1980’s Master of Suspense, Brian De Palma, and also including Martin Scorsese, Sam Peckinpah and William Friedkin. Here we will be screening some of the best films of the careers of five of the greatest maverick directors, followed by a lecture and workshop which will celebrate the highs and lows of the respective director’s career and their place within the history of the American film industry and give people the opportunity to critically analyse the films and their individual scenes. Film critic Wayne Byrne will be hosting the series of discussions and lectures; he has been writing on cinema for several years, having reviewed films and interviewed filmmakers for Kildare newspaper Leinster Leader as well as Click film magazine and entertainment website FrankTheMonkey.com. He has previously lectured on the history of American Cinema.
