Rathangan is a quiet town with a population of just over 2,000 on the bank of the Slate river and the Grand Canal providing pleasant waterside walks and coarse angling. It was the site of an early Celtic fort or rath, and a later Fitzgerald outpost. Writer Maura Laverty (1907-1966) was born there. The library in its present location opened in 2003.
