A Long Way down by Nick Hornby
The unlikely scenario of four different people meeting on New Year's Eve on the roof of
“Toppers House” to commit suicide is the basis of this story. I would describe the book as a black comedy. We get to know the characters of Martin, Maureen, Jess and JJ and gain insights into their lives and the reasons that drove them to the verge of desperation.
The become a group, supporting each other but with a strong element of “tough love” forcing each individual to look at his/her life and to recognise the changes that should take place.
An interesting aspect of Nick Hornby's book is that every chapter is “written” by one of the four characters thus enabling the reader to know exactly how one character regards the other three!
Difference of lifestyle and expectations in life comes across as we hear about Maureen (who is a full time carer for her disabled son) who dreams of taking part in a table quiz and working in a newsagent's shop! She is the catalyst who has a humbling effect on the others, causing them to pause and reflect on their own lives.
“A Long Way Down” is a book I enjoyed and the narrative is skilfully handled by Nick Hornby.
