The National Car Test (NCT) was introduced on 4th January 2000
What are the benefits of car testing?
- safer vehicles
- improved reliability
- improved fuel economy
- cleaner air/less noise
- Potential for lower insurance costs
What cars must be tested?
Testing is being phased in over the period 2000 to 2002 as follows:
Cars first registered before 1 January, 1992 must be tested in 2000*
1992 - 1996 registered cars must be tested in 2001*
4 year old cars and all liable older cars must be tested in 2002*
*The test will be due in the relevant year on the anniversary of the date of first registration of your car in Ireland or abroad, whichever is earlier and subsequent tests will be due every 2 years.
Where do I get my car tested?
There are forty-three test centres in Ireland, including one near Naas. If your car is due to be tested the NCT should be writing to you with a test appointment. If however, you do not receive an appointment contact the NCT directly at the telephone number below.
What happens if I don't get my car tested?
You will be unable to tax a car liable for testing unless it has passed the test and you have obtained an NCT certificate. The certificate will have to be produced when applying for tax, and a disc displayed on your windscreen.
It is an offense to use a car liable for testing in a public place without an NCT certificate.
