The Driver Theory Test came into effect on 25/04/2001 and was amended on 21/10/06.

Please Note: The fee for the Driver Theory Test increased from 12/04/12.

The New Fee for a Driver Theory Test is €45.00 each.

The New Fee for CPC Theory Test is €72  each.

The Four categories for DTT are :      

  AM     -     Motor cycles & Mopeds

  BW     -     Cars, Car & Trailer, Work Vehicles & Land Tractors 

    C        -     Trucks & Commercial Vehicles - Over 3,500Kg

    D        -     Buses & Passenger Vehicles with over 8 passenger Seats

"Do I need to sit a Driver Theory Test?"

YES, if any of the following applies:

• You are applying for a 1st Learner Permit in any category.
• Your previous Learner Permit (Provisional Licence) has expired by 5 years or more ( by 10 years or more in the case of a full driving licence)
• You hold a current driving licence in a particular category, but wish to apply for a Learner Permit in a category in which you have not previously passed the Driver Theory Test.
• If you have previously held a Driver Theory Test Certificate in a particular category, but fail to submit it to you Local Motor Taxation Office as part of a 1st Learner Permit Application, within 2 years from the date of issue of the Driver Theory Test Certificate.
