Building, Acquisition & Alterations to Houses

Building/Acquisition Of Houses

Athy Town Council has approximately 250 rented properties in its ownership. Each year a number of new houses are built while a number of houses are sold to existing tenants under tenant purchase schemes.

An Assessment of Housing Needs is carried out by the Local Authority usually every three years to establish housing requirements in the area. This assessment was last carried out in 2002 and forms the basis for allocation of housing starts by the Department of the Environment and Local Government. The actual number of houses built or acquired depends on the DOELG’s housing starts allocation.

Extensions to Local Authority Houses in Lieu of Re-housing

Where a housing applicant is an existing tenant of the local authority, but the existing accommodation is overcrowded, an extension to existing accommodation may be provided in lieu of rehousing.

Extension/alteration of local authority houses for disabled persons.

In cases where a disabled person resides in a local authority house which requires extra accommodation or alteration to existing accommodation to meet his/her needs, the local authority may carry out such work, or offer alternative accommodation more suited to the persons needs. Applications for a disabled persons grant may be submitted to Athy Town Council who will then forward your application to Kildare County Council.
