Burial Grounds- St. Michael's

Athy Town Council maintains the burial grounds at St. Michael's Old Cemetery and St. Michael's New Cemetery (located on the Dublin Road) in the town and employs a caretaker for this purpose. The local Cemetery Committee liaise with the Council on maintenance and improvement works to the cemeteries.

The current fee for burial plots is €500 for a single plot and €1,000 for a double plot. There is also a fee of €30  for interments. The purchase of plots can be arranged through the Environment Section.

Bodies may not be buried, other than in approved burial grounds, save with the prior permission of the Minister for the Environment, Heritage & Local Government. A licence for exhumations is required and applications are considered in accordance with legislative requirements.
