Stories for the Ear

In 2009 Neil Donnelly approached Kildare Arts Service with a project to showcase the work of Kildare writers. Along with the Arts Service the project was developed and 10 new works by Kildare writers were submitted and recorded by professional actors in the Platform4 Recording Studio @ Leixlip Library.

Celebrating Kildare Writers : A Note from the Producer

These pieces by well known and not so well known Kildare writers show a broad range of subject matter. In quite a few, a foreign location often has a telling influence. In ‘Postcard from the Taj Mahal’ where a mother awaits her son’s arrival at Dublin airport and ‘The Parasol’ where past and future collide in London’s Hyde Park, India is an important backdrop. In ‘Turning Turner,’ Rome is the destination for contrasting siblings. In Greece the return of a coat has consequences. Then in Valencia, a murder. ‘Stye’ is Aidan Higgins’s name for the Isle of Man in this 1960 piece, extracted from ‘Asylum’  where Beckett’s influence is prominent. Back to the aul' sod for ‘Saturday Afternoon’ a study of a non-selling used car salesman. ‘Lifting Skin’ contrasts the punishments of the ‘beauty’ business and those behind closed doors. ‘Turning over a new leaf’ is an affectionate portrait of an idealistic teacher and a painter’s eye weaves impressionistically through ’Woman walking on Nassau Street’
