  • Writer in Residence - In association with Poetry Ireland

The Writers in Residence Programme takes place in primary and post-primary schools and is designed to fit in with the timetable, particularly at second level. The residencies involve a short residency by a writer to a school, where the writer works closely with one teacher and with the same class or group throughout the residency.

  • Per Cent for Art commissioning in schools

Kildare County Council Art Service offers an advice service to primary and secondary schools on all aspects of commissioning art projects under the Per Cent for Art scheme associated with recent school capital projects.  The Art Service recently formed a panel of artists for use by schools.

  • ‘If I Had an Artist for a Day ...’ programme

Established in 2003, this is a one day artist in schools programme subsidised by Kildare County Council Arts Service.  Programmes are offered to all primary schools in Co Kildare in visual arts, theatre, dance, music, architecture, film, literature on a year round basis.  Skilled artists, living locally are Garda Vetted by the Arts Service.  35% of schools in Co Kildare avail of this programme annually.  The programmes changes and evolves based on feedback from teachers and current developments e.g Programmes in dance, music and drama as Gaeilge have been developed.

  • Professional development opportunities in dance for teachers

Kildare County Council is well regarded as the only local authority in Ireland who offered internationally renowned accredited training for teachers, community workers and health care professionals in Laban based community dance training.    A biennial Dance Summer School takes place in NUIM, which has qualified as a summer course for teachers.  This year the course runs from Mon 21st-Friday 25th July.  Bursary awards are available for teachers from Co Kildare.  The Arts Service has also devised and run a Dept. of Education approved Dance and ICT course.

  • TY Sound Engineering @ Platform4 Audio and Digital Media Studio

Located in Leixlip Library, the Platform4 Studio offers a range of services.  A bespoke TY Sound Engineering course was devised in 2008 in response to a request from a TY student.  In 2012, a mobile recording studio will be procured to provide a Sound Engineering course in individual schools.  Other programmes have included a Radio Play project for young people.  In 2012, an audio cd of short stories written by young people in Kildare will be launched at the Kildare Readers Festival. 

The Digital Media Studio, launched in 2011 offers TY programs for students interested in film editing and digital arts.  Courses in scriptwriting, film production and accredited training in film editing will be provided by Filmbase Ireland.

  • Funding for Arts and Education programmes

In 2009, an Artist in Schools bursary award was established to further support artists working in schools.  One award of € 2,500 is offered to primary and secondary schools in Co Kildare.  The money is allocated for artists fees.  The award is advertised in January each year, closing date strictly 12 noon on Tuesday 18th March 2014(closing date is always around St Patricks Day).  Other grants and award opportunities are also offered which may be of interest to schools.

  • Joy to the World

‘Joy to the World’ cribs and artefacts Christmas exhibition – a display of seasonal artefacts from 50 countries across the world.  Guided tours were provided to school groups and others.  It is estimated that 6,000  children and young people  attended the exhibition since 2008.  It is intended to extend the education programme for schools in 2014.

  • Outreach Programme of Riverbank Arts Centre

Supporting the Education and Outreach Programme of Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge.  Initiatives include an artist in residence programme with Theatre Lovett, supported by Arts Council and Kildare County Council Library and Arts Service

  • 'Animating Architecture'

In 2012, launched 'Animating Architecture', a funpack for children, exploring architecture in their area.  Using the pilot which was developed for Leixlip, a series of funpacks based on towns in Co Kildare will be launched in 2014 

  • Supports for artists

Supporting the national www.practice.ie programme which supports professional development and reflective practice for artists working in schools and community settings, by facilitating local and national meetings and networking opportunities for artists.
