How to... Make a Film with Young People

In May 2010, Kildare County Council Arts Service ran a six week training course in filmmaking. The course was aimed at youth leaders who wanted to develop a film project with their youth group.

Below is a broad overview of  the areas that were covered in the course.

  •  Survey of the basic equipment and software needed to make digital film in youth work.
  •  Pre Production - Techniques for creating and developing a story for film with young people
  •  Pre Production - How to storyboard and plan for a shoot.
  •  Production - Overseeing the shoot (roles and responsibilities)
  •  Post Production - Editing (using basic editing software available on most PC's)
  •  Post Production - Sharing the finished piece (burning to DVD and uploading to the internet)
  •  Child Protection and Copyright issues.

Kildare County Councils Youth Arts Strategy 2009 – 2011 outlines the commitment to the training of youth leaders, young people and emerging artists throughout County Kildare.  In 2009 a series of training and mentoring programmes were designed to fulfil this commitment and also stimulate artistic development in the field.
 
How to… Make a film with young people.
Tuesday, November 3rd 2009 10am – 5pm.

This one day training, facilitated by Peter Kelly, filmmaker and Youth Theatre Officer with Carlow County Council, offered leaders working with young people practical advice and techniques on film making.

This training is aimed at youth leaders and volunteers who would like to make a film with their group. Youth leaders and volunteers who are already making films with their groups and want to pick up some new skills in this area.

The training focused on:
Basic filmmaking techniques
Different approaches to filmmaking
How to storyboard a film
How to put together a production plan.

The afternoon session was a practical workshop on film making. Participants took part in a workshop and got the chance to put their new skills into practice.
