Creative Exchanges Taster Workshop

Naas Day Care Centre, March 2009

In March, Kildare County Council Arts Service in partnership with HSE Health Promotion Service and Age and Opportunity, hosted a one day taster workshop on Creative Exchanges, an arts in care training programme.  The purpose of the workshop was to introduce Creative Exchanges to care staff and explore the feasibility of providing training for care staff in County Kildare.

Creative Exchanges is a FETAC approved training programme tailor made for staff working with older people in care settings.  Workshops aim to enable participants to tap into their own creativity so they can then facilitate creative activity with the older people in their care.

The taster workshop was facilitated by Creative Exchanges tutors Elly McCrea and Gerda Teljeur and included a collective visual art workshop, visualisation and drama exercises, and feedback sessions.  Participants included those working with older people in day care centres, disability services, mental health services and residential units. Feedback gathered on the day indicates there is a strong interest and demand among care staff for arts in care training in County Kildare.

Participant Feedback:

“The visualisation exercise was very important and powerful and should be done with all care workers.”

“Staff don’t get enough of this kind of training.”

“Working within the medical model you are always looking for the illness - the challenge is to get out of that way of thinking.”

“I made a network, I’m on my own a lot, I got the opportunity to share ideas.”
