Cub Section

Cubs

Cub Scouting is a fun and adventurous programme for young people 8 - 11 years of age (changing to 9 - 12 yrs at present). Cub Scouts are encouraged to work, play and grow together through a programme of games, crafts, nature study and activities in the outdoors designed to match the vivid imagination of young people of this age. The idea of Scouting is to teach children some "life skills", to become positive contributors to the local and wider community in future life.

As a Cub Scout a young person becomes a member of a `six' (a group of up to 6 Cub Scouts) within a Cub Pack (4 or 5 sixes). Cub Scouting is about fun, adventure, and challenge but it is also about learning by doing. This is achieved in a number of ways:

  1. Working in small groups (sixes)
  2. Working on projects
  3. Fun and adventurous outdoor activities designed to reinforce skills gained as part of the programme.
Our Cub section leaders are Ann Smith, Jimmy Smyth, Mary Dunne, Tom Bergin, Linda Walsh.  We meet on a Tuesday night from 7:30 to 8:45 n St Kevin's GAA Centre.

Cubs Badges

The Badge Scheme

cub skills badgesThe Badge scheme consists of Progressive badges and Skills badges. In both cases it is important that the Cubs 'Do their Best' when working for a badge and it is the effort made by the Cub rather than the absolute standard reached that determines the awarding of the badge.

A 'Skills Badge' is a badge that you can be awarded for being interested in or really good at something. You can decide on the skills badges that you would like to try. Some badges will need help from yours Leaders, some you will try yourself away from the Cub Scout Pack and some you will need your Cub Scout friends to help you. But for each and every badge it is very important that you should 'do your best'.

There are 30 badges to choose from. When you have finished all the challenges required, your Leader will arrange with you when you will be presented with your well earned badge.
