"It is a completely local initiative" Mayor Fitzpatrick said. "One of the firefighters who lost his life on September 11th as he went up the steps of the North Tower was Sean Tallon, a young Donadea man whose family emigrated. We wanted to do something to remember Sean and his colleagues and all the other public officials who died that day. This wonderful memorial is the result."

The Memorial

The Memorial is a scaled replica of the Twin Towers, carved in blocks of Limestone. It was crafted under the supervision of Bernard Groome, a local stonemason and sculptor. It was designed by Brian Swan, Senior Architect with Kildare County Council.

The Memorial is erected on a specially prepared plinth, with carved crests inlaid in stone flags. The twin blocks carry the names engraved of all the men and women of the New York Fire Department, Police Officers and Port Authority officals who died in the Twin Towers.

The memorial is set in a specially prepared copse of newly planted native oak saplings. These oak saplings will grow to maturity, and will live for well over a hundred years"

Sean Tallon

Sean Tallon was a young Irish American who joined the New York Fire Department as a Fire Fighter. Along with 343 of his colleagues, and members of other emergency services, he died on September 112001 in the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre.

His father was born in Donadea, and Sean kept close connections with his grandmother. His relatives and friends still live in the community. Donadea 9/11 Committee was inspired to commission and erect the Memorial, in his memory, and in memory of all those who died.

The Memorial was formally unveiled and dedicated on September 21st 2003 in a ceremony led by the Mayor of County Kildare, Councillor Michael Fitzpatrick.

The ceremony was attended by a large gathering of many hundreds, including many from the New York emergency and rescue services, as well as other dignitaries, all of whom paid tribute to those who lost their lives.

The ceremony followed a parade to the memorial site which was led by the Pipe Band of the Dublin Fire Brigade.
